Faith in Jesus Christ

And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? (Matt. 14:22-31)

In our every day lives, we are like Peter in so many ways. We use our faith and we step out of the boat onto the water and start walking toward Christ. But all too often, we shift our focus from Him to the world around us, just as Peter did. He was afraid of the storm, afraid of sinking, so he got distracted. What wold have happened if he had kept his eyes on the Savior? Would he have become afraid? No. The Lord is mighty to save, and when we put our complete trust in Him, He will not fail us.

Each of us may be in the midst of our own storms. They could be family problems, relationship problems, financial problems, health problems and the like. Each of these are difficult to go through and we search all around us for something to hold on to as we begin to sink in the waves of adversity. The answer to all of our problems is found in the following scripture:

And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. (Helaman 5:12)

Build upon the Rock. Focus your faith in Christ, focus your life toward Him. Your winds and waves, whatever they are, can be conquered by Christ. Remember when He said to the storm, “Peace, be still” ? He can calm your troubled heart just as easily.
